Pterygium and ultraviolet radiation: a positive correlation.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pterygium has long been believed to be an environmental disease, Ultraviolet (UV) radiation playing a major role in its development. In examination of more than 100 000 Aborigines and non-Aborigines in rural Australia a strong positive correlation between climatic UV radiation and pterygium prevalence was found, providing further evidence of a causal relationship. In addition interesting differences were found in prevalence in the different racial groups and between the sexes. These differences may be explained by differences in lifestyle.

Pterygium in welders.
Pterygium is thought to be hyperaemia of fibrovascular tissue on to the cornea caused by ultraviolet radiation of sunlight. We observed a significantly high incidence of pterygia in welders who were exposed occupationally to excess ultraviolet radiation and found a close relationship between the incidence and the length of employment as a welder (r = 0.975, p less than 0.05). This study attempt...
متن کاملExpression of survivin protein in pterygium and relationship with oxidative DNA damage
Ultraviolet radiation is known to cause oxidative DNA damage and is thought to be a major factor implicated in the pathogenesis of pterygium. Among all the photo-oxidative DNA products, the 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is regarded a sensitive and stable biomarker for evaluating the degree of DNA damage. The protein p53 is a major cell stress regulator that acts to integrate signals from a w...
متن کاملResponse of conifers to UV-B and climate in mountain areas
The present study was focused to examine the combined effects of climate and ultraviolet-B radiation on conifer tree-ring density. Statistical methods were employed to extract tree responses in annual ring density and to identify functional relationship in trees when the level of ultraviolet-B radiation changes regardless of climate variations. In this study, the consideration was given to the ...
متن کاملDose Assessment of Phosphorus-32 (32P) for the Treatment of Recurrent Pterygium
Introduction Pterygium is a wing-shaped, vascular, fleshy growth that originates from the conjunctiva and can spread into the corneal limbus and beyond. Beta irradiation after bare sclera surgery of primary pterygium is a simple, effective, and safe treatment, which reduces the risk of local recurrence. Materials and Methods Dosimetric components of strontium-90 (90Sr), phosphorous-32 (32P), an...
متن کاملFrequency of Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) in Pterygium Using Real-Time PCR Based on SYBR-Green I Fluorescence
ABSTRACT Background and objectives: Pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of conjunctival tissue that can extend onto the corneal surface. The presence of some oncogenic viruses in pterygium and the neoplastic nature of these lesions led us to the postulated involvement of the viruses in the etiology of pterygium. Given the association of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) with ocular disea...
